The Different Types of Spa Treatments

After a week’s worth of good (or bad) work, we all need to unwind. It isn’t really a luxury, at times it is more like a requirement. Remove the burnout from your system, get refreshed and ready for the next work week. Spend a day at the spa!

As life becomes more hectic and daily schedules continue to overflow, the one thing many people forget to take care of is themselves. Children, spouses, jobs, bosses, and long commutes crowd our minds, leaving little room to relax and recharge.

Those lucky few who do manage to steal a few moments of peace unwind in many ways. For some, it’s a good workout in the gym. For others, it’s golf. And for many, it’s a luxurious spa treatment.

A spa treatment can mean a variety of things. For simplicity’s sake, these are often broken down into a few items: massage, aromatherapy, and skin and nail treatments. Each of these pampering rituals offers their own benefits.

Massage

According to Wikipedia, “massage is the treatment and practice of soft tissue manipulation with physical, functional, i.e., mechanical, medical/therapeutic, and in some cases psychological purposes and goals. Massage involves acting on and manipulating the patient’s body with pressure (structured, unstructured, stationary, and/or moving), tension, motion, or vibration done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, and/or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, forearm, and feet. There are over 80 different massage modalities.”

Besides the obvious soothing results, massage also offers many health benefits including pain relief, reduced anxiety and depression, and a temporary reduction in blood pressure.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is another popular spa ritual, which Wikipedia defines as “a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person’s mood or health.”

From antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant agents, the effects of essential oils can be nothing short of amazing. Combined with a massage treatment, aromatherapy takes detoxification and relaxation to a whole new level.

Skin Treatments

Skin treatments are as varied and unique as the people who enjoy them. From full body scrubs and exfoliations to facials, these luxurious procedures help the body and mind relax while replenishing the skin with nutrients. Removal of dead skin via exfoliation helps unclog pores, keep the skin clean, reduce breakouts, and can be applied just to the face or the entire body.

Nail Treatments

More commonly known as manicures and pedicures, nail treatments are an excellent way to relax and be pampered. Wikipedia states that “the word ‘manicure’ derives from Latin: manus for hand, cura for care.” Both treatments include nail care as well as foot and hand massage. Besides improving appearance, these treatments can aid in circulation.

Manicures and pedicures are also quite relaxing and calming and are a great way to unwind if you do not have time to dedicate to other spa treatments.
